Plane Type:P-38 Lightning

During the first part of the war, the American Army had very few reconnaissance resources available to it – the 8th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron in fact being its only source of aerial photographic surveillance in this critical, pivotal period (1942-43) in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations. In the illustration above, an 8th PRS pilot, flying an unarmed Lockheed F-5 Photo Lightning, armed only with his courage, wits, and experience, attempts to outmaneuver an equally-skilled Imperial Japanese Army Ki-43 "Oscar" pilot from the 59th Sentai, and continue photographing Japanese activity near the Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea airfield complex during the critical weeks prior to the Allied invasion of that area, 22 April, 1944.
