Plane Type: Fairchild AC-119G Shadow
In the last of the evening light, a Fairchild AC-119 "Shadow" gunship begins its nocturnal patrol of the highlands that characterized much of the long Vietnam/Laos border. It was through this difficult terrain that much of the Ho Chi Minh Trail worked its way south from North Vietnam. The AC-119 "Shadow" and its later iteration, the AC-119K "Stinger" were potent night-interdiction weapons for the USAF's tactical air arsenal, although perhaps a little less well-known than the AC-47 "Spooky" and the spectacular AC-130 gunship version of the versatile Lockheed Hercules. The painting was created for the cover of VIETNAM Magazine, April, 2006 illustrating an article which described a mission over the highlands where a single AC-119K crew destroyed eight NVA tanks in a matter of minutes on Feb. 28, 1967.
