With the end of WWII, the National Air Races were resumed at Cleveland in 1946 and the feature event, the Thompson Trophy, was made up entirely of surplus World War II fighters. "Tex" Johnston got off to a fast start in his modified Bell P-39Q Airacobra and led all the way to set a new world speed record for closed course racing of 373.91 MPH. This beat Roscoe Turner's record set in 1938 by 90 MPH! The "Golden Age" of air racing was over, and this race ushered in a new generation of aircraft utilizing the highly modified warbirds. There were twelve fighters in the race, including P-51s, P-63s, an F4U, and finishing 2nd, a P-38 flown by Tony Levier. Having won the highly prized Thompson Trophy, Tex's career would include many aviation "firsts" and he eventually became head of Boeing Aircraft's Flight Test Division and chief test pilot. He went on to become one of the greatest jet age test pilots in history. PLANE JUNKIE - Sting of the Cobra by Nixon Galloway (Bell P-39 Airacobra)
