Thunderbolt over Wewak depicts the moment that Neel Kearby earned his Medal of Honor - 11 October, 1943.

Col. Neel Kearby, Commanding Officer of the 348th Fighter Group, Fifth USAAF sends a Ki-43 "Oscar" flown by Imperial Japanese Army Ace Lt. Col. Tamiya Teranishi - of the 14th Air Division down in flames over Wewak, Papua New Guinea. After having been attacked from astern, the unfortunate Teranishi's "Oscar" was one of six enemy aircraft officially credited to Col. Kearby's aerial victory tally on 11 October, 1943 in the vicinity of the Wewak-Boram Imperial Japanese Army airfield complex, earning him the Medal of Honor upon this date. Col. Kearby was subsequently killed in action nearby not long after this date. PLANE JUNKIE - Thunderbolt Over Wewak by Jack Fellows (P-47 Thunderbolt)
