Plane Type: Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress

One of six Y1B-17s crosses the rugged peaks of the Andes on its way from Chile to Argentina at a mountain called Aconagua, Stone Sentinel. Lt. Col. Robert C. Olds, 2nd Bombardment Group Commander, and Lt. Curtis E. LeMay, navigator, were in this lead ship on a goodwill trip to South America. The six Y1B-17s made up half the United Staes' entire heavy bombardment force when they flew nonstop to Buenos Aires, 20 February, 1938.
