Aerolineas Argentinas, formally Aerolneas Argentinas S.A., is Argentina's largest and flag carrier airline. The airline was founded in 1949 when four companies merged, and it began operations in December 1950. Following a period of severe financial difficulties that put the airline on the verge of closure, a consortium led by Iberia gained control of the airline in 1990, and Grupo Marsans bought the company and its subsidiaries in 2001. Since late 2008, when the Argentine government recovered control of the airline after it was taken over from its Spanish owners, the firm has been managed by the Argentine government. Aerolneas Argentinas was state-owned as of December 2014. Its headquarters are located in Buenos Aires. In late August of 2012, SkyTeam became a member.
