Space Craft: Apollo 8
On December 24, 1968, Apollo 8 reached the moon after a 3 day journey. It was a bold journey as this was only the second manned flight of the Apollo spacecraft. Additionally, it was the first manned launch of the Saturn V rocket. The crew orbited the moon 10 times over the course of approximately 20 hours. The crew famously read from the Book of Genesis during a Christmas Eve broadcast which, at the time, was the most watched TV program ever. Commander Frank Borman closed the broadcast with, "And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas – and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth."
