Today in Aviation History – June 23, 1961 – Major Robert M. White exceeds Mach 5 in an X-15

Major Robert Michael White, United States Air Force, turned into the main pilot to surpass Mach 5 in an airplane. This was the 38th trip of the X-15 Program. Trips during this stage of the X-15 gradually sped up speed and height to its plan cutoff points of Mach 6 and 250,000 feet (76,200 meters).
