From the grandstands, looking back to your right, you can often hear them before they come into sight. The race planes cluster in formation as they head dwn the chute toward the start of another unlimited heat. "Gentlemen, you have a race." These words first spoke by Mr. R.A. Bob Hoover have proclaimed the start of unlimited competition for 27 conscutive years during the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada, since their beginning in 1964. Unqustionably the most qualified Mustang pilot ever, Bob Hoover served as pace pilot and safety advisor for all unlimted competions until 1997 when he sold the plane to his good friend John Bagley.
Bob Hoover, the pilot's pilot, has been inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fam, was two-time President of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, and holds several international speed and climb records. During his war-time servece Bob was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal, The Soldier's Medal, The Purple Heart, and The Prisoner of War Medal. Bob passed away this year on October 25th 2016 at the age of 94. He will be truly missed.
