Early in the morning on April 21, 1944 when VF-16, off the USS Lexington was flying missions that were in support of the allied landings at Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea, second section leader Francis M. (Frank) Fleming spotted an Imperial Japanese Army Mitsubishi KI-21 "Sally" Bomber flying along the edge of a dense ground-fog layer that was common in this area that time of day. Lt. (JG) Fleming rolled in on the easy target which was at his two o'clock, about 8,000 feet below and attacked at a high closure rate, destroying the target in one pass - close to the shore of Lake Sentani. Fleming went on to complete his tour aboard Lexington with 7.5 confirmed aerial victories. PLANE JUNKIE - Hellcat's Breakfast by Jack Fellows (F4F Wildcat)
