Editorial art for AVIATION HISTORY Magazine, January, 2001, depicting Flight Officer Frank Hurlbut, 96th Fighter Squadron/82nd Fighter Group/12 USAAF destroying a Me. 109G off the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples on 2 September, 1943. Although the identity of Hurlbut's victim is not confirmed, it is believed to be Oblt. Franz Schiess, JG 53, who disappeared on that day while engaged in a fierce air battle against the P-38s of the 96th Fighter Squadron, near Ischia.

96TH Fighter Squadron/82nd Fighter Group ace, Flight Officer Frank Hurlbut is seen on September 2nd, 1943 off the island of Ischia, in the Bay of Naples, having just shot down Jg-53’s leading ace, Oblt. Franz Schiess during a fierce fighter battle involving many Axis aircraft of various types and many 12th USAAF P-38 Lightnings.
